Bau to see more hotels and tourist attractions

- Jacqueline David

BAU: More hotels and other tourists attractions facilities will be built in Bau within these three years, said Deputy Minister of Transport Dato Henry Harry Jinep.

Even right now, physical progress on Bau development can be seen, especially around Tasik Biru area, he added.

“We have seen progress coming up in Tasik Biru, now slowly people realise that Tasik Biru is an interesting place to visit. We want to develop Bau into a resort city.

“Bau town is aggressively improving its tourism. We are in the process to improve our tourism in Bau, more hotels and other tourism facilities are coming up, so that when people come here, they have a place to stay, for example building more hotels around Bau town.

“At the moment, we do not have hotels here, but we are slowly improving,” he said when met during the event to welcome 40 beauties from the Miss Tourism International Pageant to Bau town yesterday.

Commenting on the visit by Miss Tourism International Pageant participants to Bau, the Tasik Biru assemblyman said it is once in a life time event, and Bau people are happy to be part of the 25th Miss Tourism International.

The beauty pageant was first held in Kuching in 1994 and after 25 years, it has made a comeback, with some 40 beauties from all over the world flying in to the state.

“We are happy that the Miss Tourism International is back in Sarawak after 25 years and now they are here visiting Bau.

“We are lucky to have Bau being developed into a very aggressive tourism destination, otherwise they would not pick Bau as one of the destinations. With all the 40 beauties coming to Bau, hopefully these people will be our ambassadors, promote Bau to the world so that more people will come to Bau in the future, that is our aspiration,” he said.

Henry also hoped that with more activities in Bau, more investors will be interested to invest in Bau.

“That is the most important thing, to create jobs and employment, business opportunities and creating more social economic activities. In most countries in the world, tourism is a big business, and Bau wants to be part of it, so tourism will be part of our activities to build the people’s socio-economic activities,” he said.

With the Bidayuh hinterland, all the way from Tebedu to Lundu, under Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency, tourism will play important role in bringing in more socio-economic activities, especially in Bau, he pointed out.

Meanwhile, another new landmark and tourism product for Bau was opened yesterday, which is the suspended hanging glass bridge on top of a hill next to Tasik Biru Gold Miners Temple, constructed by Tecktonic & Sons.

The fee for using the bridge measuring 30 metres in length and 2.5 wide with an 8-metre hammerhead viewing glass deck is RM10 for an adult and RM5 for a child.

According to Tecktonic & Sons project manager, Freddy Chong, the glass bridge was built within a month and 26 days after construction started on Sept 22, at a cost of half a million ringgit.

“The bridge was constructed with glass as its flooring so you can see Tasik Biru lake below, and we have an 8-metre hammerhead viewing glass deck, if you want to enjoy the view atop,” he said, and added that only 20 people are allowed at any point of time to walk on the glass bridge.

Also present at the event were Miss Tourism International D’Touch International president Tan Sri Danny Ooi and YAST Group founder Esther Law Lee Poh.

Bau town is aggressively improving its tourism. We are in the process to improve our tourism in Bau, more hotels and other tourism facilities are coming up, so that when people come here, they have a place to stay, for example building more hotels around Bau town.
