Sudden rush of people coming home to vote causes massive traffic jam in Kapit

-

KAPIT: The heavy traffic along the roads linking Kanowit, Song and Kapit has caused a massive jam in town.

The long queue of vehicles extends from SK Kapit at Jalan Bletih up to the town centre, stretching over 5km.

A four-wheel drive vehicle (4WD) driver told The Borneo Post yesterday that he left Sibu on Thursday and was met with traffic congestion upon reaching SK Kapit.

“I had to endure two hours in traffic before reaching town.

“All the vehicles were moving at a snail’s pace. I think the problem is that there are too many vehicles along that narrow stretch,” he said, requesting anonymity.

On any regular day, it would only take between 10 and 15 minutes to drive between SK Kapit and the town centre.

Based on The Borneo Post’s observation since Thursday, there have been hordes of people coming home to Kapit ahead of today’s polling day for the 15th general election (GE15).

They comprise the constituents who are either working or studying outside Kapit, with many of them travelling in their own vehicles.

However, the sudden high number of these returning voters is good news to the local economy, especially the bakery shops and the eateries, which have been experiencing brisk business over the past few days.
