GPS team, voters have put up good fight – Ching Yong

- Peter Boon

SIBU: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Lanang candidate Wong Ching Yong believes he and his team have put up a good fight despite their loss in the 15th General Election (GE15).

While expressing regrets over his defeat, he thanked his team and the voters for their support.

He noted that the first 10 days of the campaign period had been positive, but it had somehow been derailed by issues played up by the oppositions in the final three days prior to polling day.

“For the first 10 days, we were optimistic in our fight for the parliamentary seat but towards the final three days – there were three issues that had affected us very badly.

“The first being the campaign by Democratic Action Party (DAP) that is, if you vote for GPS, Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will be acqui ed of all gra charges against him.

“Zahid, as a candidate representing Barisan Nasional (BN) had also been the deciding factor and had a big impact on Sarawakian urban voters,” he said.

“Secondly, DAP urged Sarawakians to vote for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, whom they deemed as an open-minded leader. However, it seems that they have forgo en that Anwar, as the then Education Minister, was also involved in the 1987 ‘Operasi Lalang’.

“And thirdly, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s comment on ‘Christianisation’,” he said to reporters a er making rounds at the Sibu Central Market here yesterday to thank the traders and the public for their support.

Wong was however glad that DAP’s winning majority had been greatly reduced from about 14,000 votes to some 11,000 in this GE15.
