Repok rep: Extend affordable housing scheme to Sarikei

-

Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii (SUPP-Repok) has asked the state government to extend the Affordable Housing Scheme to Sarikei apart from upgrading existing facilities and infrastructure.

Huang, who was elected Sarikei MP in the just-concluded 15th general election, said that during his campaign trail, people from the low-income group wanted him to bring up their request for facilities under Affordable Housing Scheme, which is being implemented in other areas, to be extended to them as well.

He also requested the state government to upgrade sports and recreational facilities, roads and the waterfront, and build more parking spaces at Sarikei Polyclinic.

The sports and recreational facilities which needed urgent upgrading were Sarikei sports complex and swimming pool where many facilities were already dilapidated or having technical problems, he pointed out. The Sarikei sports complex, which was one of venues for state Sukma athletes to undergo centralised training, is also in dire need of repair and upgrading, he added.

“Shortage of parking spaces at Sarikei Polyclinic must be resolved too. The elderly and physically-challenged patients have to walk for quite a distance to the polyclinic after managing to find ‘illegal’ parking space along Old Hospital Road. “To ease congestion of vehicles entering and exiting the town, which is expected to worsen after full completion of Pan Borneo Highway and Sungai Pasi/Tanjung Manis Road, I suggest the upgrading of Nyelong By-Pass and building of an alternative road from Nyelong By-Pass to Kwong Ming-Minah Road,” he said in a statement.

The Sarikei Waterfront, which is a popular venue for hosting water sports, was also in need of more upgrading, he added.

“The waterfront is already too old and therefore it was high time to give it a facelift to make it on par with waterfronts in other places in Sarawak,” he said.
