A total of 292 graduands from the 2020, 2021 and 2022 batches received their scrolls at SEGi College Sarawak 17th Convocation at Raia Hotel here on Wednesday.

SEGi College Sarawak principal Susie Lau Meng Ching, in her congratulatory message to the graduates and their parents, said the future of the graduands ought not to be dictated by the high unemployment rate in the country as was reported in the press or on social media.

“We should get out there, chart our own footprints on different lands – venture out from your comfort zone! Know that great things will come through at times of adversity,” she said.

“Excellent start-ups, innovative ideas and products and even social movements have come about as people discard the status quo and do things differently. Thus, walk out of this place and with the perspective that there is no better time to be a graduate and be part of this renewal,” she noted.

Adding on, she pointed out that success does not necessarily come with a high IQ or innate talent but one must be willing to work hard to earn it.

“I always tell my students to learn all that they can when they are in college and not to limit themselves with curricular and academic tasks, but instead to push themselves out of their comfort zone,” she stressed.

“This graduation marks the beginning of a new journey. You are about to step out into the real world as future critical thinkers, entrepreneurs, leaders – contributing to the local and global community.

“Be honest in all that you do, for it is honesty and integrity that will enable you to improve and fit into the society. Use the knowledge that you have acquired, not only to improve yourself but also for the transformation of your society and country,” she said.

David Christopher Smith from the Diploma in Accountancy received the best graduate award for diploma programme, meanwhile Christabelle Joelle Then from the Bachelor of Laws, University of London received the best graduate award for bachelor’s degree programme.
