Voon: Police should be careful not to abuse power

-

Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) president Voon Lee Shan reminded the police to be careful about using their power and not to abusing it.

Voon, who was released from police custody yesterday morning, told reporters that the police must know their area of jurisdiction as an entity that had the power to arrest people.

He was arrested along with four PBK members for allegedly being in a convoy protesting in and around Kuching on Wednesday evening.

“I think it’s high time for the police in Sarawak to be more careful and professional,” he said.

Voon further alleged that the police officers had delayed his medication, and continued to lock him up until 5am when he was finally sent to the hospital.

His counsel Dominique Ng, when met at the court, said although Voon and the four PBK members were released on police bail and had their remand applications withdrawn, they were still brought to court in handcuffs.

“Why did the police bring them to the court in handcuffs? They (police) could have opened the handcuffs at the police station because they don’t have any case against my clients.

“This is an abuse on the part of the police which has caused extreme embarrassment to my clients. We have asked that this incident be put on record.

“If there is any future prosecution, this is a part of a malicious prosecution case against the police,” said Ng.

Apart from Ng, the five individuals were represented by counsels Lim Heng Choo, RJ Noel, Patrick Voon, Steven Sia, and Alex Kong.
