Two drivers detained for exceeding alcohol limit

KUCHING: Two drivers were detained by the police after they were found to be driving above the allowed alcohol limit Friday night.

They were stopped during an ‘Op Mabuk’ roadblock at Jalan Tabuan which ran from 9pm Friday to 2am yesterday.

Kuching District police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said 68 summons were also issued to drivers for various traffic offences during the operation.

“Also, a total of 121 vehicles and 147 individual­s were checked by the police which comprised three officers and 14 personnel of other ranks,” said Ahsmon.

He added that three drivers aged between 36 and 47 were brought to the district police headquarte­rs for the Evidential Breath Analyser (EBA) test.

Two of the men showed an alcohol level of 51mg/100ml and 150mg/100ml which exceeded the permissibl­e limit of 35 mg/100ml.

They are being investigat­ed under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

They may be fined of between RM10,000 and RM30,000 or a jail of not more than five years on conviction. Their driving licence may also be suspended for a period of five years.
