Youth gets jail for robbery, two others still at large

KUCHING: A 20-year-old youth was sentenced to nine years’ jail and four strokes of the rattan for committing armed robbery at an eatery outlet at Jalan Batu Kawa on Oct 4.

Sessions Court Judge Musli Ab Hamid imposed the sentence after the accused pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 395 of the Penal Code, which was read together with Section 397 of the same code.

Musli also ordered the sentence to run from the day of the arrest which was on Oct 17.

Prior to sentencing, the accused’s social report and recommenda­tions by the Social Welfare Department were also presented to Musli.

According to the facts of the case, the accused together with two other male suspects who are still at large, had robbed a 22year-old female worker at a food premises in Batu Kawa at around 6.30am on Oct 4.

The victim, together with another employee, was getting some chores done for the day’s daily business routine when they were approached by the trio.

It was also learnt that two of the robbers had their faces covered with a T-shirt, while the third robber’s face was not covered.

The victim also claimed that one of the robbers was armed with a sharp object, believed to be a ‘katana’ or a long-singleedge­d sword during the robbery.

The three-man gang was reportedly unable to open a safe in the premises, and left with the victim’s smartphone and a sling bag in a car.

A police report was immediatel­y lodged which led to the arrest of the accused on Oct 17.

Deputy public prosecutor Norshafati­hah Nor Azmi prosecuted, while the accused was not represente­d by a counsel.
