1919 - The Treaty of Neuilly was signed, under which Bulgaria was forced to cede territory to Yugoslavia and Greece.

1941 - The last Italian forces in Ethiopia under General Nasi surrendere­d at Gondar. Over 23,000 prisoners were taken.

1942 - In World War Two, the German army entered Toulon and the French fleet anchored there was scuttled by its own crews.

1989 - Avianca Flight 203:. A Boeing 727 explodes in mid-air over Colombia, killing all 107 people on board

and three people on the ground. The Medellín Cartel will claim responsibi­lity for the attack. 2002 - U.S. President George W. Bush appointed Henry Kissinger to lead an independen­t investigat­ion of the government’s failure to prevent the Sept. 11 attacks.

2003 - Taiwan’s parliament approved a landmark bill that allowed the island to hold referendum­s on sovereignt­y and other issues, despite warnings from China.

2004 - Pope John Paul II, attempting to mend relations with Orthodox Christians, returned to Istanbul the remains of two fourth-century church leaders, St Gregory Nazianzen and St John Chrysostom, 800 years after Crusaders snatched the sacred relics from Constantin­ople.

2005 - An explosion ripped through the state-owned Dongfeng coal mine in China’s northeaste­rn Heilongjia­ng province, killing 171 miners.

2006 - Democratic Republic of Congo’s Supreme Court declared Joseph Kabila president, confirming his election victory.

2009 - Bomb causes Russian Nevsky Express train to crash near the village of Uglovka, killing dozens of people.

2013 - World’s largest Chanukah menorah marks the start of the holiday season in New York.
