Elizabeth Tan reveals she has alopecia, hair loss has led to lack of confidence

- PETALING JAYA:

Popular singer-actress Elizabeth Tan suffers from the auto-immune disease alopecia, which has caused her to have a low sense of confidence.

“I have had auto immune issues since I was a year old which caused me to have skin problems. I developed alopecia in 2018, causing me to have bald patches, which would sometimes become bigger,” she told Media Hiburan.

She said she kept her illness from the public because she did not want people sympathising for her. “I feel sad and pressured every time a new bald patch appears. There is no cure and it also causes eyebrows and eyelashes to drop.”

She added that she had turned down a role recently as it would require her to have short hair, resulting in her hair being slow to grow back and her alopecia to flare up.

The condition was highlighted when actor Will Smith slapped host Chris Rock at the Oscars after Rock make fun of Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair.

In 2018, Pinkett Smith said she had the condition and she has been open about her hair loss.

WebMD states that alopecia is an autoimmune disorder that causes hair to come out.

Hair loss is different in everyone-some lose it in a few spots while others lose a lot.
