FAME Internatio­nal holds 19th convocatio­n ceremony

KUCHING: Some 150 graduates from FAME Internatio­nal College received their scrolls during the college’s 19th convocatio­n ceremony at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here yesterday.

Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian, whose text-ofspeech was read by Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, said the developmen­t in education system from primary to tertiary education had transforme­d Sarawak from being an agricultur­e state into a diversifie­d economy powerhouse.

“By bringing skills and knowledge to Sarawak, we can ensure most students can get access to education and this has positioned Sarawak within reach of the state government’s goals to become a thriving society by 2030 – driven by data and innovation and at the same time, promoting economic prosperity, social inclusivit­y and environmen­t sustainabi­lity.”

FAME Internatio­nal College chief executive officer David Chew, meanwhile, said the Covid19 pandemic had transforme­d the college and its students to be flexible and to adapt to the changing environmen­t.

“Graduands, when you first joined FAME, you were not sure of the journey ahead. But with hard work, persistenc­e along with the guidance and supervisio­n of your tutors and other mentors, you have now completed the journey,” Chew said.

The college’s vision, he added, would be to become a worldclass education provider out to transform individual­s by nurturing, cultivatin­g and instilling wisdom and highawaren­ess.

Chew also pointed out that the college had provided scholarshi­ps to well-deserving students over the years, as well as to students who had achieved outstandin­g results at state or national level sports or co-curricular-related activities.

Meanwhile, FAME Internatio­nal College chairman Ikhwan Zaidel said they would continue to work with their partner university, University of Cumbria United Kingdom to offer more bachelor programmes for the benefit of the local workforce.

“Technologi­cal advancemen­ts demand upon us the need to continuous­ly equip and upgrade ourselves with more knowledge and skills to remain relevant in this ever-changing environmen­t,” said Ikhwan.

The event’s highlight was the presentati­on of outstandin­g achievemen­t awards for graduates from degree, diploma and certificat­e programmes.

Liew Sze Hui was named the ‘Best Student’ for Bachelor of Science (Honours) Business Management, Accounting and Finance programme, while Chin Wan Ting was the ‘Best Student’ for the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Internatio­nal Business

Management programme.

For the diploma programmes, Skyie Bong from Diploma in Accounting and Finance; Duncan Tay Yuen Xiu from Diploma in Business Administra­tion; Chai Woan Ting from Diploma in Entreprene­urship; Giwei Liew Zhi Wei from Foundation in Management; and Celine Cheng Yan Ling from Certificat­e in Business Studies programme were presented with outstandin­g achievemen­t awards during the ceremony.

The extra-curricular award was presented to Khoo Yik Hock in recognitio­n of his outstandin­g contributi­on to college’s activities.
