MIRI: Minister of Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin commended Institute of Engineers Malaysia Miri branch (IEM Miri) for its collaborative networks with local academic institutions and industries.

“These collaborations with local academics and industries will benefit both sectors in conducting researches for improved technologies and also in preparing human capital needs of the industry,” said Lee, in a speech delivered by Councillor Jeffery Phang, who represented the minister at the IEM Miri dinner here on Saturday.

Lee, who is Senadin assemblyman, was particularly proud of IEM Miri and its achievements, despite being among the youngest IEM branches in the country.

IEM Miri, the 12th branch in Malaysia, was set up on June 24, 1998. It started small with only 93 members and now has 341 members as of February 2022.

With continued support from members, Lee expressed hope for IEM Miri to be able to further contribute towards Sarawak development, especially in the field of science and technology and for the betterment of the industry.

Adding on, he believed IEM’s background of expertise would also be able to provide technical support or advice to the local council and local authorities.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing on future collaborations between IEM Miri and Curtin University Malaysia also took place at the event, where Curtin University was represented by Prof Dr Tuong Thuy Vu and Assoc Prof Simon Leunig.

IEM Malaysia president Prof Dr Norlida Buniyamin, IEM Miri chairperson Chong Boon Hui and past chairperson Sean Wong Siong Ung were also present.
