UTS group to donate food baskets to 58 B40 families

SIBU: A total of 58 food baskets will be distribute­d to 58 families from the B40 group in Sibu area, said Mohd Kamarul Anwar.

Mohd Kamarul, who is the event director of ‘Show You Care, Give A Share’ charity event informed that these families from various races are staying in Teku, Sibujaya, Bukit Lima, Sentosa and Lanang areas.

“This charity event ‘Show You Care, Give A Share’ is aimed at helping the target groups in need of aid, especially in terms of basic food necessitie­s.

“So, we are collaborat­ing with Baitulmal and UTS (University Technology Sarawak, to identify the deserving recipients and students so that we can distribute the aid to them.

“The 18 identified recipients of the food basket are UTS students and the rest are outsiders,” said Kamarul, who is a lecturer at School of Business and Management, UTS.

He was speaking to reporters at Hijrah Suri Mart here yesterday. The event was organised by the School of Business and Management, UTS in collaborat­ion with the Food

Technology Programme under the School of Engineerin­g and Technology, UTS.

“We will try to contact these families (58 families) from March 13-19, to distribute these food baskets from house to house so that they don’t have to come here,” he added.

Mohd Kamarul also said that the objective of this charity event is to relieve the target group of their economic burden due to rising cost of living and prices of goods.

“Besides aiming to ease their burden, this charity is also to raise awareness and inspire UTS staff specifical­ly, to get involved in charity-based events,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mart Hijrah Suri owner, Ummi Khamsiah Yacob, said this was the third year UTS had ordered food packages to be donated.

“I am very grateful because this is the third year, we (together with UTS) have been able to donate food baskets to poor families.

“Thank you to UTS for trusting Hijrah Suri Mart to find and pack food amounting to RM100 per basket to be donated,” Ummi Khamsiah said.

Also present was UTS vice chancellor, Professor Datuk Khairuddin Abdul Hamid.
