Sibu to host state-level National Sports Day

-

Sibu will host the Sarawaklevel National Sports Day (HSN) for the first time on Oct 27-29.

Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu said the venue for the three-day event is at Dataran TunTuanku Bujang Phase II.

“Many sports activities have been planned to mark the occasion and we do hope the people here will turn out in full force to support the event that is jointly organised by the Youth and Sports Development and Sibu Division Resident Office,” he added.

Rentap was speaking at a press conference after chairing the Sarawak-level HSN organising committee meeting yesterday.

According to Rentap, the national-level HSN falls on Oct 14 this year, coinciding with the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud’s birthday celebration.

“Since Oct 14 is the birthday celebration of our governor, we have moved the state-level HSN to end of October,” he added.

The Layar assemblyman said they are targeting a total of 390,000 people of all ages to take part in the event in Sibu and other parts of Sarawak during the celebration.

He said the HSN can act as the catalyst for the country to become a sporting nation.

“Additionally, we also want to inculcate sports in our society... The community can get so many benefits such as good health, friendships and so on.”

The activities for the statelevel HSN include Fun Run, Fun Ride, e-sports, tug-of-war competition, wushu, three-onthree

basketball, petanque, traditional archery, street soccer, pushbike, autoshow, extreme sports and many more.

Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah is expected to officiate the event on Oct 28.
