KUALA LUMPUR: Netflix’s live-action One Piece has been renewed for season two, just two weeks after it debuted.

The announcement was made earlier yesterday on the streaming service’s social media accounts, via a video from the creator of the popular longrunning manga and anime, Eiichiro Oda.

With the trademark ‘censorship’ of his face for his privacy, and using a prop snail transponder featured in the series gifted to him by the production, he thanked fans for supporting his work and said that “it’ll still take a while to get the scripts ready, so please be patient.

“It seems people around the world have been enjoying the show, which makes the hard work from the production team truly worth it.

“To everyone who’s been a fan of One Piece for years, and to those who experienced One Piece for the first time, thank you so much.”

Teasing fans on what to expect in the second season, Oda added that, “From here on, it seems to me the Straw Hats will need a great doctor... We will see!”, hinting at the appearance of fan favourite Tony Tony Chopper, one of the two main characters expected to appear.

One Piece follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a young pirate who leads his crew of Straw Hat pirates in search of the mythical One Piece treasure in his quest to become King of the Pirates.

The series stars Iñaki Godoy as Luffy, Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji.

It also boasts the stellar lineup of Vincent Regan, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, Morgan Davies, Aidan Scott, Langley Kirkwood, Jeff Ward, Celeste Loots, Alexander Maniatis, McKinley Belcher III, Craig Fairbrass, Steven Ward, and Chioma Umeala.

Matt Owens and Steven Maeda serve as writers, executive producers, and showrunners on the series, while One Piece’s original creator Eiichiro Oda also serves as an executive producer along with Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements of Tomorrow Studios. The series was created in partnership with Shueisha and produced by Tomorrow Studios and Netflix.

One Piece got off to a good start for the first week making Netflix’s global top 10 in 93 countries topping the charts in 46 with an 84 per cent score by critics and a whopping 96 per cent by audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and 8.5/10 on IMDB.

In its second week, it held strong still in the top 10 of 83 counties, coming out No. 1 in 74 countries.
