Telang Usan community rural project leaves lasting impact
MIRI: The just-concluded ‘Telang Usan Community Rural Project 2024’ initiated by Lions Clubs International District 308-A2 aimed to leave a lasting impact on the lives of the community in rural areas, said Kapitan Ronny Hiew.
The district governor of Lions Clubs International District 308-A2 said the programme was participated by 50 Lions from five clubs and representatives from relevant agencies.
The five Lions clubs were Lions Club of Batu Niah, Lions Club of Lambir, Lions Club of Miri Mandarin, Lions Club of Marudi Mandarin, and Lions Club of Lutong.
“The programme took the participants on expeditions to Long Bemang, Long Tujang and Long Buang to conduct various projects encompassing education, environment, youth, vision, hunger relief, cancer and health,” he said in his closing speech for the programme on Saturday.
The education project saw distribution of knowledgeenriching books, while the environment project involving the planting of coconut trees to symbolise growth and sustainability, he added.
“Regarding the vision, hunger relief, cancer and health projects, these are initiatives related to health. Through these initiatives, we provided free eye-glasses, food baskets, and conducted talks on oral cancer awareness and the importance of taking care of one’s health.
“We hope that the efforts we made improved their quality of life, brought hope and goodness and, most importantly, lasting changes to their life,” said Hiew.
Also taking part were representatives from Miri Hospital, Long Bemang health clinic, Telang Usan district office, Marudi district office and Long Bedian sub-district office who reached out to some 450 residents in three villages.
