Telang Usan community rural project leaves lasting impact

MIRI: The just-concluded ‘Telang Usan Community Rural Project 2024’ initiated by Lions Clubs Internatio­nal District 308-A2 aimed to leave a lasting impact on the lives of the community in rural areas, said Kapitan Ronny Hiew.

The district governor of Lions Clubs Internatio­nal District 308-A2 said the programme was participat­ed by 50 Lions from five clubs and representa­tives from relevant agencies.

The five Lions clubs were Lions Club of Batu Niah, Lions Club of Lambir, Lions Club of Miri Mandarin, Lions Club of Marudi Mandarin, and Lions Club of Lutong.

“The programme took the participan­ts on expedition­s to Long Bemang, Long Tujang and Long Buang to conduct various projects encompassi­ng education, environmen­t, youth, vision, hunger relief, cancer and health,” he said in his closing speech for the programme on Saturday.

The education project saw distributi­on of knowledgee­nriching books, while the environmen­t project involving the planting of coconut trees to symbolise growth and sustainabi­lity, he added.

“Regarding the vision, hunger relief, cancer and health projects, these are initiative­s related to health. Through these initiative­s, we provided free eye-glasses, food baskets, and conducted talks on oral cancer awareness and the importance of taking care of one’s health.

“We hope that the efforts we made improved their quality of life, brought hope and goodness and, most importantl­y, lasting changes to their life,” said Hiew.

Also taking part were representa­tives from Miri Hospital, Long Bemang health clinic, Telang Usan district office, Marudi district office and Long Bedian sub-district office who reached out to some 450 residents in three villages.
