MyLesen: Minister urges youth compliance with driver’s licence to promote lawfulness

-

Having a valid driver’s licence, especially among young people, will definitely make them law-abiding citizens, said Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah.

The Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development said young people riding motorcycles without a valid driver’s licence must be a concern for everyone.

“If it is common to break the law, no driver’s licence, what about the others? We don’t want it to become a habit to break the law.

“We want the next generation of people to obey the law,” she said at the handover of licences under the Driver’s Licence Assistance Programme (MyLesen) for Dalat district yesterday.

Fatimah added that she was delighted with the overwhelming response from local people attending the programme.

“The response to the MyLesen programme was beyond our expectations. I still remember when we held it before, but on a smaller scale at SMK Dalat. This time, when we look at the number of people, 961 people, it shows that there is a desire to get a licence among the elderly and young people.

“The main constraint is financial, but in this programme the fee is only RM250 per person compared to the usual fee of RM650,” she told reporters following the event.

Fatimah, who is Dalat assemblywoman, said when the Road Transport Department (JPJ) offered the MyLesen programme in her constituency, it was wellreceived by the people.

She said members of the community wanted to obtain their driver’s licence so that there would be no sense of doubt, fear or anxiety when law enforcement officers carry out their operations.

“Thank you JPJ for making it convenient for the people. What was not right before can be corrected, especially for senior citizens who have been driving without a licence for so long,” she said.

Additionally, Fatimah believed that having a valid driver’s licence could further boost economic activities in Dalat, especially among small traders who have to transport their products to other locations daily.

“The impact of this programme is very significant, not only in terms of instilling good values in the young generation, but it can also help improve the socioeconomic situation of the locals,” she said.
