MoHE closely monitoring students’ safety amidst Middle East turmoil

The Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) is aware of the turmoil that is now occurring in the Middle East between Iran and Israel, which has indirectly caused uneasiness to neighbouri­ng nations Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq.

“The MoHE is closely monitoring situations through the Education Malaysia (EM) offices in Jordan and Dubai, as well as maintainin­g continuous communicat­ions with the Malaysian Embassies in Tehran, Iran and Amman, Jordan to inquire about current developmen­ts and ensure safety and welfare of students,” said the ministry in a press release.

According to MoHE, authoritie­s are also informing the public on the airspace closure in certain countries.

On this matter, it said it would discuss the cautionary steps, such as the possibilit­y of bringing the students back with the necessary authoritie­s.

It is stated that there are 1,872 registered Malaysian students in Jordan, 37 in Syria, eight in Iran, while no students are recorded in Lebanon and Iraq, as of the time being.

In the statement, MoHE urged Malaysian students in the affected countries to remain calm, to always be informed about the current situation, and to always comply with the authoritie­s.
