Nadma: 759 flood evacuees in Selangor, N. Sembilan and Melaka

-

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 759 people were at six flood relief centres in Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Melaka as of yesterday morning, down from 1,319 people the previous night.

The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) said in Selangor, the evacuees are being accommodated at a relief centre in Klang (204 from 57 families), Kuala Selangor (48 from 12 families), and Petaling (382 from 90 families).

“In Negeri Sembilan, 10 people from four families are being housed at a relief centre in Rembau and 67 people from seven families are in Port Dickson, while in Melaka, 48 people from 11 families are at a relief centre in Alor Gajah,” it said in a statement.

Nadma also said the levels of Sungai Klang in Pekan Meru, Klang (Selangor), and Sungai Besut in Kampung La, Jerteh (Terengganu) are at the danger point.

The levels of Sungai Duyong in Bemban, Melaka, Sungai Linggi near Pekan Linggi in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, and Sungai Buloh in Parit Mahang, Kuala Selangor, are at alert point.

Meanwhile, Melaka Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman Datuk Kalsom Nordin said the state Welfare Department (JKM) has placed more than 300 personnel on standby.

She said JKM personnel will be stationed at relief centres to ensure the welfare and comfort of flood evacuees.

“The Melaka JKM personnel will be among the first to help flood victims, even if they are still in the Hari Raya mood, and will provide the best service in any situation.

“Among the services provided by JKM to flood victims are counselling sessions to help ease the emotional burden of those whose properties are affected and round-the-clock care at relief centres,” she told reporters after the Pengkalan Batu state constituency Aidilfitri open house here Wednesday night.

Kalsom urged the Village Development and Safety Committee (JPKK) in floodaffected areas to play a proactive role to ensure flood victims receive assistance provided by the state government, such as food kits and financial aid.

At least 57 houses in Melaka Tengah and Alor Gajah were affected by flash floods following more than two-hour rain on Sunday, forcing the evacuation of the affected residents to several relief centres.
