Downpour triggers flash floods, fallen trees in Kuching

-

The city yesterday witnessed a downpour, which caused several parts of the city to be inundated by flash floods starting at around 11.30am.

The heavy rain also caused fallen trees, with one reported in Matang Jaya where a roadside tree fell onto a passing vehicle.

No injuries were reported from the incident and as of 2.30pm, the area has remained passable to other vehicles, and the fallen branch has been moved to the side of the road.

At Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman Yaakup, a tree which fell onto the middle of the road was cleared by the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba).

It took firefighters some 30 minutes to clear the road from the debris as they wrapped up the operation at 12.55pm.

The firefighters also conducted patrols in flood prone areas such as in Satok, Kampung Kudei, Jalan Tabua and Jalan Pending By-pass.

At noon, the areas surrounding Padang Merdeka were also inundated with floodwater but at around 2pm, the flash floods had cleared up and traffic could be seen returning to normal.

The swift rise in water levels yesterday caught many residents off-guard, leading to traffic disruptions and challenging conditions such as at Jalan Stephen Yong and Jalan Batu Kawa heading towards Bau, which then experienced slow traffic.
