(pic left) and Ahmad Zamhuri Mat Nayan’s THE 10 finalists of this year’s BMW Shorties competition have been chosen and announced from a total of 48 entries. This fourth instalment of the popular annual short film competition saw filmmakers getting creative with stories of love and life and issues affecting Malaysian society and tying them in with the competition’s theme, “0% wastage”.
The finalists (in no particular order) are: Ahmad Zamhuri Mat Nayan’s Bajet, Moh Chee Loong’s Confession Of Smiley, Chen Yih Wen’s Like Toy Dolls, June Tan’s Success Rate, Tan Ce Ding’s My New Car, Denis Ting Wee Siong’s Who Cares?, Tinesh Krishnan’s Hooked, Mahendra Chidambaram Pillai’s Kickstart, Gary Liew’s Perspective and Mahendran Balasupramaniam’s Plan B.
This year’s competition also features allnew award categories such as best actor, best actress, best cinematography, best screenplay, best production design and best editing. The nominees for these categories are: > Like Toy Dolls, Bajet and Perspectives for Best Cinematography
> Success Rate, Bajet and Like Toy Dolls for Best Screenplay
> Like Toy Dolls, Hooked and Kickstart for Best Production Design
> Perspectives, Who Cares? and Bajet for Best Editing
> Karnan Kanapaphy in Kickstart, Faiz Samion in Bajet and Tinesh Krishnan in Hooked for Best Actor
> Junvina Lim Kai Mun in Who Cares?, Raja Ilya Mohd in Hooked and Jerrica Lai in Success Rate for Best Actress
The public can now watch the films at the BMW Shorties website www.bmwshorties. com.my and vote for their favourite for the People’s Choice Award.
The winners will be announced at the BMW Shorties 2010 Gala Premiere on Nov 25 at MAP KL, Solaris Dutamas, Kuala Lumpur.
This year’s panel of judges comprised award-winning documentary filmmaker Harun Rahman, award-winning actress Sharifah Amani, filmmaker and producer Manesh Nesaratnam and commercial producer and executive producer of the BMW Shorties 2007 winner K-Hole, Nisha Omar.
Independent filmmaker Tan Chui Mui withdrew from judging duties due to her work schedule for her latest film, Year Without A Summer. –
