(pic left) and Ah­mad Zamhuri Mat Nayan’s THE 10 fi­nal­ists of this year’s BMW Short­ies com­pe­ti­tion have been cho­sen and an­nounced from a to­tal of 48 en­tries. This fourth in­stal­ment of the pop­u­lar an­nual short film com­pe­ti­tion saw film­mak­ers get­ting cre­ative with sto­ries of love and life and is­sues af­fect­ing Malaysian so­ci­ety and ty­ing them in with the com­pe­ti­tion’s theme, “0% wastage”.

The fi­nal­ists (in no par­tic­u­lar or­der) are: Ah­mad Zamhuri Mat Nayan’s Ba­jet, Moh Chee Loong’s Con­fes­sion Of Smi­ley, Chen Yih Wen’s Like Toy Dolls, June Tan’s Suc­cess Rate, Tan Ce Ding’s My New Car, De­nis Ting Wee Siong’s Who Cares?, Ti­nesh Kr­ish­nan’s Hooked, Ma­hen­dra Chi­dambaram Pil­lai’s Kick­start, Gary Liew’s Per­spec­tive and Ma­hen­dran Bala­supra­ma­niam’s Plan B.

This year’s com­pe­ti­tion also fea­tures all­new award cat­e­gories such as best ac­tor, best ac­tress, best cin­e­matog­ra­phy, best screen­play, best pro­duc­tion de­sign and best edit­ing. The nom­i­nees for these cat­e­gories are: > Like Toy Dolls, Ba­jet and Per­spec­tives for Best Cin­e­matog­ra­phy

> Suc­cess Rate, Ba­jet and Like Toy Dolls for Best Screen­play

> Like Toy Dolls, Hooked and Kick­start for Best Pro­duc­tion De­sign

> Per­spec­tives, Who Cares? and Ba­jet for Best Edit­ing

> Kar­nan Kana­pa­phy in Kick­start, Faiz Samion in Ba­jet and Ti­nesh Kr­ish­nan in Hooked for Best Ac­tor

> Junvina Lim Kai Mun in Who Cares?, Raja Ilya Mohd in Hooked and Jer­rica Lai in Suc­cess Rate for Best Ac­tress

The pub­lic can now watch the films at the BMW Short­ies web­site www.bmwshor­ties. and vote for their favourite for the Peo­ple’s Choice Award.

The win­ners will be an­nounced at the BMW Short­ies 2010 Gala Pre­miere on Nov 25 at MAP KL, So­laris Du­ta­mas, Kuala Lumpur.

This year’s panel of judges com­prised award-win­ning doc­u­men­tary filmmaker Harun Rah­man, award-win­ning ac­tress Shar­i­fah Amani, filmmaker and pro­ducer Manesh Ne­sarat­nam and com­mer­cial pro­ducer and ex­ec­u­tive pro­ducer of the BMW Short­ies 2007 win­ner K-Hole, Nisha Omar.

In­de­pen­dent filmmaker Tan Chui Mui with­drew from judg­ing du­ties due to her work sched­ule for her lat­est film, Year With­out A Sum­mer. –
