Utar collaborates with worldclass technology leaders

-

Utar Faculty of Information and Communication Technology dean Dr Liew Soung Yue. CCDO is the most advanced state-ofthe-art facility of Intel Malaysia. Worldwide, it designs about half of all the Intel microprocessors for CPU, laptop and mobile applications.

He adds: “The collaboration started with the MDeC-Intel Microprocessor Forum held on Feb 2012, where Intel strengthened its ties with nine Malaysian universities including Utar for research in the area of very-large-scale-integration (VLSI).”

During the forum, the Bachelor of Information Technology (Hons) Computer Engineering programme won the hearts of the Intel CCDO principal engineer and engineering managers and emerged as most technically impressive among all programmes presented by the nine universities.

To affirm this fact, Intel has donated to set up in Utar an Intel lab with 32 servers for teaching and research purpose. It is expected to be completed by the end of 2012. Utar will lead in working out a standard lab platform for all other eight universities.

To work closely with Intel, the faculty has appointed the senior manager of Intel CPU Design Automation as industry advisor. It also sends its Computer Engineering lecturers and under- and postgraduate students for attachment at Intel CCDO to learn first-hand the latest technological advancements in Intel.

Utar trains graduate trainees of Intel under the MSC Malaysia Job Camp – VLSI Design Methodology and Implementation.

The university is one of the only two universities that offer the MyProCert – Embedded Systems Programme, whose curriculum is developed in partnership with global technology leaders such as Agilent, Altera and Intel.

Since Dec 2003, Utar has entered into an MoU with Microsoft (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd to incorporate Microsoft technologies into Utar academic programmes.

”Under this collaboration, Microsoft sponsors selected students to become Microsoft Student Partners who serve as Microsoft ambassadors in Utar,” says Dr Liew.

As the application of ICT is getting ever more important in every industry, career prospects for ICT graduates are abundant.

They are employed in many areas such as software development, technical consulting, telecommunication, web design and development, banking and finance, manufacturing, biotechnology, healthcare, education and civil service.

To cater to the needs of the industry, the faculty offers eight under- and postgraduate programmes which are Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons), Bachelor of Information Systems (Hons) Business Information Systems, Bachelor of Information Systems (Hons) Information Systems Engineering, Bachelor of Information Technology (Hons) Communications and Networking, Bachelor of Information Technology (Hons) Computer Engineering, Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons) (Part-time), Master of Computer Science and Doctor of Philosophy (Computer Science).

Each year, about 250 students of the faculty have their industrial attachment with industry partners such as Huawei, Intel, Fairchild, IQ Group, CSC Malaysia, Sony EMCS, Sharp-Roxy, and Southern Steel.

”Many companies have been contacting the faculty for our students for attachment. Some of these students even manage to secure a job before their graduation,” Liew concludes.

With the January 2013 student intake, Utar is inviting school leavers, their friends and families to come to the Utar Open Day to enquire on programmes and participate in the open day activities. Details are as follows:
