Strathclyde business strategy challenge
THE University of Strathclyde Business School in collaboration with the University of Strathclyde Alumni Malaysia (USAM) and CDC Management Development (M) Sdn Bhd (CDC) organised the first Business Strategy Challenge in Malaysia on Nov 23, Eastin Hotel, PJ.
The event targeted professionals as well as Strathclyde graduates with the objective of giving them exposure to business strategy — a pre-requisite to succeed in a competitive business environment such as Malaysia. The challenge was opened to the public and was designed to be engaging and fun while enhancing participants’ knowledge on strategy. The event also provided the alumni to engage and network with non-alumni members through sponsorship opportunities and participation of non members. The event attracted approximately 90 participants and 20 guests from numerous backgrounds including manufacturing, engineering, consultancy, telecommunication, services, insurance, legal profession and many more.
The expert panels of judges from Strathclyde Business School are Professor Colin Eden (vice dean and director of International Division), Dr. Ronald Bradfield (associate dean & academic director Global MBA) and Dr. Michael Marck (academic manager - South East Asia).
This event attracted 12 sponsors from various sectors. The Gold Sponsor for the event was OMS Group of Companies and the Silver Sponsor for the event was ASIA Metropolitian University (AMU). The other sponsors who contributed either in cash or kind were from Jaring Metal, CDC Consulting, Connoisseurs Lounge, Norman Disney and Young, Pierre Ledent Malaysia, Bottles and Bottles, Aliyaa Restaurant, Fotorex, Evogue Image, Vellora Fashions and Eastin Hotel.
The event was opened to teams of four or five people from any organisation or individuals. There was no requirement for them to have previous training or experience in strategy as the objective was for participants to learn as they progress through the challenge. The teams faced a range of strategy challenges covering both the theory-based strategy questions to give them some insight into the theory perspective and also practical-based questions so that the participants had a feel of real business- based situations. After two hours of going through the intriguing challenge, the top three winning teams from the 20 teams that participated walked away with prizes. All participants also received a Certificate of Participation endorsed by Eden.
Strathclyde Business School (SBS) is internationally respected as one of the most innovative business schools in Europe with one of the largest academic faculties. Strathclyde is accredited by Association of MBAs (AMBA), European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) and Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), and is one of only 48 in the world to have such a distinction. In fact, less than 1% of business schools in the world hold triple accreditation status. In Scotland, no other business school is accredited so highly.
