The right course for you

- S there are so many options available for education, choosing the right course of study is essential. The question is how do you make the right decision? To reduce the daunting and lengthy task, here are a few tips for you to ponder on:

Come up with a list of courses you would consider studying based on your interests and what you enjoy doing. Add the topics that you were most interested in during school as well as jobs that you see have the potential.

2. Check out the prospects of the available courses

Check online and find out about the career prospects and other information. Speak to people who are in your interested profession. People who have completed university courses can give you an insight from a student’s perspective - they can tell you the pros and cons.

3. Understand the course content thoroughly

To avoid making mistakes, make sure you review the course outline of the course(s) you want to apply for. Have a look at the subjects you must undertake and the types of learning, assignments and examination tasks involved. This will enable you to form a rough idea of what lies ahead for you.

4. Visit the institution to get a real scenario

If you are set on going to a particular institution, don’t let this completely dictate your course selection. Compare course outlines and studying facilities for your educational needs and preferences. Visit the institution and attend some of the lectures to get a feeling of what some of the subjects will be like.

5. Find out the duration of the course

It is important to know the duration of your course. Taking double-degrees, full time or part-time depends on your personal choice. Ensure that you will be able to balance your other priorities along with education. Study flexibility varies amongst universities.

6. What kind of study approach would you prefer ?

Some people prefer final exams, others like regular assignments to keep them busy throughout the year. Some like theory, others like practical hands-on application. Some like to work in groups, others like to work individually. Choose a course that suits your study style, and you will be more confident of achieving success.

7. Make sure the course match-

es your personality

To find the course that matches your personality, you should do a self-examination to discover your strengths and weaknesses, what you like and dislike. Once you find the right match, it makes it easier for you to dwell on the subject that you like and keep your interest going.

Participate in ‘A Day in the Life of a KLMUC Student’ contest. Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan University College (KLMUC) is currently running “A Day in the Life of a KLMUC Student” contest to give school leavers the feel of campus life while guiding them to make the right choice for their career course programmes.

The campaign also aims to help school leavers in making the right choices by furthering their education. School leavers would also be able to gain a better understanding of what campus life is like and gain a head start in their careers.

To take part in the contest, participants will have to log on to www. discoveru.com.my, take a personality quiz and then watch any one of the seven videos.

The videos would reveal what a student experienced through a typical day at class.

Eventually, an “incident” will occur that would challenge the student’s knowledge in their respective study. Viewers are encouraged to participate by answering a simple question at the end of the video and create their most creative slogan.

The contest ends in December whereby winners could stand a chance to win an iPad as well as other attractive prizes.
