Raising the bar
TAR College is synonymous with academic excellence and holistic education. After the formation of the College in 1969, its first offering was the Pre-University programmes under the School of PreUniversity Studies (‘SPUS’) with a pioneer enrolment of 764 students.
With over four decades of providing PreUniversity education, the SPUS has earned a respectable reputation for its Cambridge Alevel programme that consistently churns out many students who have achieved excellent results and gained admission to some of the world’s most renowned universities.
The Cambridge GCE A-level qualification is widely accepted as one of the key admission criteria for many universities in the world. Hence, TAR College relentlessly prepares many young Malaysians for the Cambridge A-level examination that will help them to take on the academic challenges at the undergraduate level.
At SPUS, students enrolling in the Cambridge GCE A-level programme can choose either the Science or Arts stream, depending on the strength and interest of the students concerned.
In the course of the programme, students will have to attempt the examination in two phases, namely Advanced Subsidiary (AS) and Advanced Two (A2) levels, or they have the option to attempt the examination at the end of the programme.
SPUS has an enviable track record of producing high-achieving students who excel at the Cambridge GCE A-level examination. For the June 2012 examination, SPUS registered yet another impressive record of students achieving excellent scores.
A number of students achieved world-beating results. Puah Boon Keat, Wong Joelyn, Lee Cheong Yew, Maggie Lim and Teh Jong Thyn performed extremely well, garnering the title as the Top in the World for Mathematics in the AS Level examination.
Meanwhile, Karin Fam reached the Top in the World for Mathematics and the Top in Malaysia for General Paper in the AS Level examination. A towering percentage of 32% of the total students attained outstanding results of AAB and above for A Level.
With these results, the students are eligi- ble to enter the top universities in the world.
Many of the students from SPUS have been accepted to study at some of the world’s most prestigious universities. One of them is Tan Zhai Gen who was admitted to study Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry at University of Oxford on MyBrain Sc scholarship in 2012.
Two of the students from SPUS, twins Aaron Kong Kit Sieng and Alvin Kong Jit Meng, were accepted to pursue an engineering programme with full scholarship at University of Hong Kong in 2012 as well.
Besides that, some students have proceeded to Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, London School of Economics, Cardiff University, Australian National University and National University of Singapore, just to name a few.
Zhai Gen commended the environment, quality of teaching and facilities at TAR College that helped him to do well in his studies.
“I was taught the syllabus comprehensively and more, such as the real life application of the theories. The environment is conducive for learning and I was also given the opportunity and encouragement to express my talents,” he said.
“For over 40 years, SPUS has cemented its excellent track record in providing Cambridge GCE A-level programme. The success of our students bears testimony to the quality of our teaching and facilities at TAR College,” SPUS head Looi Li Chin said.
The Cambridge GCE A-level January 2013 intake is currently in progress.
