Dashing towards design success

aN innovation-driven, global-oriented and career-focused learning experience has enabled INTI’s students to shine and succeed, including in the Malaysia finals of the SAP Dashboard Design Competition 2012. In the past year, it has incorporated 125 projects by employers that include IOI Corporation, Poney, TNT and HP.

Competing against strong teams from reputable higher education institutions in the country, INTI International University’s team of Bryan Lim Wen Zhou and Vulcan Gui Ming Sian emerged among the top three with their interactive dashboard that impressed the judges.

“Numerous employer projects in addition to our regular coursework in the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Network and Mobile Computing programme had given us invaluable experience and the confidence to do well in the competition,” said Lim, whose portfolio includes network, graphic and website design for TNT, Padini and GRM.

The competition required participants to use data given by SAP, a leading provider of business management software solutions and services, to create an interactive dashboard to analyse the Olympic Summer Games results from 1996 to 2012.

“Experience taught us to apply simplicity and clear data presentation in our design. Keeping to the point certainly worked for us!” said Gui, who together with Lim, won the cash prize of US$400 (RM1,240), a trophy and certificates.

Supervising lecturer Che Fuzlina Mohd Fuad said that she was pleased the students had taken their own initiative to learn and develop new skills on top of their busy study schedules.

“Minimal coaching was provided, which makes their success in the competition even more impressive,” she said.

The INTI curriculum emphasises on all- round development of a student’s cognitive and practical skills.

Close collaboration with the industry ensures that the curriculum developed is relevant to market needs, and more importantly, focuses on soft skills such as project management, teamwork, and handling proposals, among others, which are essential skills when entering the work force.

Working alongside Cisco Networking Academy, INTI incorporates the CCNA and CCNA wireless syllabus into its Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Network & Mobile Computing programme, to ensure that students develop the skills to design and manage medium-sized networks.

The partnership also presents a pathway to professional certification in CCNP and CCIE.

INTI offers a blended learning approach incorporating online support, industry projects, interactive business simulations and mentorship by industry partners and distinguished academics – all based on the learner’s personal development programme for personal effectiveness.

As part of the Laureate International Universities network, INTI has access to global resources, best practices, teaching methods, international faculty and management tools that are truly world class.

Students of INTI benefit not only from the institution’s over 25 years of experience and strong track record, but also gain from the global synergy and resources that Laureate International Universities provides.
