A noble and rewarding career
THE Tun Tan Cheng Lock College of Nursing (TTCL CoN), which is also known as the Assunta College of Nursing, has grown by leaps and bounds since its inception in 1961.
The college has been recognised by the Malaysian Nursing Board through the Anugerah Kolej Cemerlang Ketua Pengarah Kesihatan 2012 (Emerald Award) for providing more than 50 years of excellence in nursing education.
Transcending traditions, the college beckons enthusiastic young men dedicated to the cause of offering compassionate healthcare.
Although nursing is predominantly a “female territory”, Tang Yit Wai, 20, and Calvin Xavier, 18, first-year students at TTCL CoN, are unfazed by this.
Instead, they have chosen to focus on their goal, which is to cater to the increasing need for male nurses in the country.
“For me, it’s not about the gender but more about comforting somebody in their vulnerable moments,” said Tang.
“I’m optimistic about my future as a male nurse in the nursing industry worldwide, especially when I learnt that Assunta graduates are welcome everywhere,” said Calvin. He hoped to be able to work overseas and pursue his passion for travelling.
Nurses have always been in demand and TTCL CoN graduates are highly sought after in the healthcare industry due to its legacy of quality nursing education.
As the first private nursing college in Malaysia with the support of a tertiary care, award-winning hospital, the college has traversed a long road as pioneers in the industry.
The college is well-equipped to provide students with fundamental practical skills and it has the added touch of compassion.
Students start their practical training in their first semester.
“The three-year Diploma in Nursing course will be exciting and challenging as our curriculum focuses on real-life experience with patients at Assunta Hospital which is just a stone’s throw away from the college,” said Tang.
Part of the course’s extensive curriculum includes community nursing which allows students to contribute to society via home visits and health awareness campaigns.
Students and parents do not have to worry about the credentials of the college as it has consistently attained 100% passes in the Malaysian Nursing Board Examination (Lembaga Jururawat Malaysia or LJM) for the past 50 years.
The college has been producing the crème de la crème of nurses, with many graduates scoring distinctions in the Malaysian Nursing Board Examination throughout the past few decades.
In the June 2012 Nursing Board Examinations, 29 of TTCL CoN students scored a distinction, the highest accomplishment among other nursing institutes. It earned the college a certificate of recognition from the Board.
This further emphasises the benchmark and the standards that are well established at the college. TTCL CoN is also known for its established Diploma and Post Basic Certificate courses.
Students and parents who are interested to know more about TTCL CoN can attend the college Open Day on March 23 from
9am to 1pm.
