A Cut Above the rest
WHEN we talk about the hairdressing profession, the first thing that comes to mind is trimming, perming, colouring and styling. Is that enough today?
In the early 1970s, people took up this career by working as an apprentice in a salon, learning the skill one day at a time.
In the mid-80s, hairdressing schools mushroomed all over the world and people took up hairdressing courses in order to avoid the “slow learning process”.
Salons preferred to employ graduates rather than take in apprentices.
However, A Cut Above Academy founder Winnie Loo felt that there was “something missing” in the graduates. She felt that graduates could perform their tasks physically, but had little knowledge of their skills.
In 2004, Loo started her own academy – one that produced not only skilful stylists, but knowledgeable ones as well.
Starting off with theoretical classes before going “hands on” gave the students a better understanding of the “whys” and “hows”.
The A Cut Above Academy is today recognised by the Government as a Pusat Bertauliah (training centre) which certifies students with the Government’s SKM certification.
A Cut Above has also been awarded the “Best Training Centre for three consecutive years for hairdressing” by City & Guilds, London, as well as a Brand Laureate in 2011 in recognition of having the best Hairdressing Academy.
Make-up was introduced as an optional subject to complement their skill in this trade.
Next month, it will be adding another subject to the course, which is photography.
Today, there are not many multi-talented graduates in Malaysia and the demand is great. A Cut Above believes that its students’ career begins with the academy.
