An eye to the future

THE National Institute of Ophthalmic Science (NIOS), which is the academic arm of The Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital (THONEH), was established under the auspices of the hospital to provide quality education and undertake research work.

Its vision is to promote excellence in the sphere of medical education and to make better eye care available in Malaysia and her neighbouring countries.

In the institution’s School of Optometry, NIOS is offering a specially designed 4+0 year programme.

The Bachelor of Science in Optometry (B.S. Optometry) programme is conducted in collaboration with The Birla Institute of Technology and Science – Pilani, India (BITSPilani). The four-year programme is conducted entirely in NIOS and THONEH’s premises at Lorong Utara B, Petaling Jaya.

Global demographic trends have made optometry one of the largest independent healthcare professions. It offers a variety of fields for specialisation.

The institute’s mission is to create a pool of competent and self-reliant optometrists who can do more than just prescribe glasses and lenses.

Being in the frontline of eye-care, optometrists can avert eye diseases and create public awareness on safeguarding vision and preventing eye problems. The optometry degree is fully accredited by The Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) (A7179) and it is the only integrated hospital-based optometry programme in Malaysia.

Students will be exposed to stateof-the-art equipment and clinical facilities at THONEH.

The entry requirements for this programme are STPM, A-Level or its equivalent.

The first graduation ceremony of the School of Optometry was held on May 14, 2011.

Eighteen students received their scrolls for the Bachelor’s Degree in Optometry from BITS-Pilani vicechancellor Prof Dr Bijendra Nath Jain.
