CLASSICAL Ming style Chinese furniture exudes peace and serenity. Its fine forms and simple lines create a sense of clarity and balance in one’s surrounding.
The making of these distinguished pieces dates to the disgruntled Chinese Ming scholars who were disillusioned with the political intrigues in court.
The decadence, wrought by ambitious eunuchs in the late Ming Imperial Court, caused scholars and poets to seek a more refined and peaceful life away from the politics.
They began to look towards designing furniture for their scholar’s studio, furniture that will uplift the spirit and lighten the heart. The designs were made along the lines of pure Chinese philosophy as espoused by the past sages.
Gandhara Sdn Bhd, a leading oriental antique specialist in Asia, showcases a vast array of classical Ming style Chinese furniture.
Located at Ampang Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, Gandhara will showcase an array of beautiful furniture, including Juwood, Lacquered and precious Huanghuali from classic Chinese furniture from March 9 to 24.
Armchairs, carved cabinets, classic bookshelves, display cabinets, elegant tapered or Wanli cabinets and portable chests can be found at the gallery.
From the northern official hat armchair to a multi-purpose bookshelf with four drawers, most of the items feature craftsmanship that are both intricate and harmonious.
Known for its distinctive selection of quality oriental works of art, Gandhara features Chinese antique furniture, imperial robes, textiles, ceramic and Terracotta figurines of the Han, Ming and Tang dynasties.
The exhibition is inclusive of Cambodian sculptures, Indian sculptures, Japanese Okimono, Thangkas and antique Buddha images.
