Credible medical programmes
THE Management & Science University (MSU) is one of Malaysia’s top universities and achieved Excellent Status University under a rating system used on all universities in Malaysia.
As a university of choice, MSU offers courses in the areas of medical science which complements the nation’s need for qualified medical personnel in Malaysia and the region.
MSU’s Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme is designed to achieve the nation’s 1:600 doctor patient ratios by 2020 – in comparison to the 1:1,791 ratio today.
The MBBS programme is being offered at its main campus in Shah Alam and its offshore campus in Bangalore, India.
MSU’s offshore campus in Bangalore is one of the first offshore medical schools to receive a five-year accreditation from the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).
MSU’s MBBS programme is a five-year programme that is divided into three phases.
Each phase varies in terms of length, subjects and activities involved.
Among the subject areas that students will be exposed to during their duration of study are human anatomy, human physiology, biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology, forensic, microbiology, ophthalmology and ENT.
The clinical session begins in phase two together with the paraclinical subjects. Housemanship commences in phase three.
During this session, students have to perform a rotational training of three months each at all relevant medical departments.
Upon completion, students have to register with Public Service Department and will complete a two-year housemanship programme at selected public hospitals under the supervision of the Health Ministry.
“There is no difference in the curriculum used at the main campus or our offshore campus.
“However, the campus in Bangalore provides the opportunity for students to experience an international setting while pursuing the medical programme in MSU,” said MSU International Medical School (IMS) dean Professor Dr Azizi Ayob.
He added: “Our involvement in the Indian sub-continent is part and parcel of our international effort to promote the Malaysian education brand to the international communities.
“We are confident that the training and exposure that these students have undergone are sufficient to prepare them for the real-life medical settings,” said Prof Azizi.
Lessons such as effective communication provide the basics needed to understand patients and MSU seeks to expose its students to such experiences.
MSU has also linked itself with several international partner universities that allow the mobility of students and staff as well as growth in research.
Intakes for the MBBS programme are in May and October and qualified students are required to sit for the Medical Entrance Test (MET).
Besides the MBBS programme, MSU also offers bachelor and diploma programmes in pharmacy.
