THE country’s furniture industry is set to grow at an exponential rate with the industry ranking 10th largest exporter of furniture in the world.

Recognising that and the budding interest among people in designer products and furniture, KBU International College is offering BA (Hons) Furniture and Product Design (3+0) in collaboration with Nottingham Trent University, Britain.

“The British degree programme is primarily studio-based with a number of supporting lectures and seminars. We also engage with industry experts and leaders to give talks to our students,” said Furniture and Product Design Programme coordinator Ho Mei Theng.

She said there was also access to workshops for model making and computer suites for the development of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) skills which would harness students with subject knowledge and understanding.

She also added that students with a degree in Furniture and Product Design may get job opportunities as furniture design-makers, product designers, industrial designers, production developers, marketers, business managers, computeraided designers in interior design, architectural, design practices and manufacturing organisations.

“Rather than only focusing on the design aspects, the British degree programme also exposes students to the industrial experience through seminars and competitions. For example, we have engaged our students to participate in competition such as MiiD 6 Belas.1 Super Designers Awards in the Super Fly Category, where KBU students emerged as the first prize winners.

“Currently, the students are actively pursuing a design competition – Promotional Product Design Award 2013 – which aims to cultivate creativity and imagination among young and talented designers.

“The competition briefs are mostly incorporated into their projects,” said Ho.

Meanwhile, Furniture and Product Design student Ulva Gan Ai Zhi spoke highly of the module programme, which exposes students to learn hands-on skills such as creating models out of wood.

“It is exciting to learn how to create models using wood. We are not only exposed to making models, but also how a product operates,” she said.

The programme also includes an optional industrial training which will expose students to industry expectations.
