Dedicated to fathers

-

When I was young, dad would buy us supper every night, from noodles to fruits and whatever we asked for. That was something I really looked forward to after dinner each night! He made sure we had the best. He used to help with the marketing, and would come back home with lots of vegetables and fruits. He was always happy to run to town on his motorcycle and get us whatever we wanted.

For that matter, I don’t remember any instant when dad said no to anything we wanted to eat or needed for school. I remember how I had homework and needed stuff like cardboard, tracing paper or sugar paper for school, and dad would never hesitate to get them for me no matter how tired he was after work. He loved buying stuff for his children. I remember him buying chicken rice almost every day for his two granddaughters (now 29 and 32) who were then in primary school, as they loved it.

He would ask us to walk to the Chinese restaurant down the road for dinner and order any number of dishes we wanted. He would join us later and foot the bill.

These days, dad doesn’t go out on his own anymore as he is not as strong. Yet, whenever I go back to visit, he always tells me how he wishes he could get me this and that. That’s dad for you.

I owe my every success to him. I’m very grateful for all he has done for me and wish I could spend a lot more time with him while he is still around.

I believe that nothing a child does is enough to repay what a parent has done for him or her. Being a parent myself today, I realise I also strive to fulfil my two children’s wishes.

Dad is turning 85 on Nov 5 this year. Even today, he never gives up on anything that he sets his mind to. He believes that one should never procrastinate or wait for tomorrow to complete what can be done today.

As a parent and educator now, I share this with my kids and students as well.
