ESTABLISHED in 2002, Tom Dixon is a British designer and manufacturing company of lighting and furniture. With a commitment to innovation and a mission to revive the British furniture industry, the brand is inspired by the unique British heritage.

Dixon rose to prominence in the mid-1980s with his unusual welded designs and by the late 1980s, he was working for the Italian giant Cappellini for whom he designed the Iconic “S” chair. In the 1990s, he became famous with his stacking Jack light/seat.

Since setting up his own design company in 2002, Dixon’s work has become even more prominent with the company now selling in 52 countries.

Today, he acts as the creative director of Tom Dixon. His contributions to design have been honoured with awards and acknowledgements. In 2000, his work was awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire). He earned a doctrate degree at the University of the Arts London and his works are in the permanent collections of famous museums such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, Museums of Modern Art New York and Tokyo and Centre Beaubourg (Pompidou), Paris.

Dixon has developed the lighting showcase “luminosity” to be displayed at the MOST design festival for Milan Design Week 2012. The collection of new lamps, lights and shades explores the potential of natural and artificial light in the future of lighting design.

One of the pieces featured in this collection is the abstract sphere lampshade, Etch Web which is 65cm wide and has an irregular pentagonal motif repeated throughout the surface of the orb. The futuristic metallic orb shade has been developed to cast angular shadows when the light inside is switched on.

Meanwhile, Etch is a digitally manufactured collection inspired by the logic of pure mathematics, employing an industrial process used to produce electronic products, such as circuit boards.
