Music and laughter in the air

Get ready for some live in-flight entertainment that includes stand-up comics and musicians.

VIRGIN Atlantic is turning its planes into flying comedy clubs and music venues as it brings a line-up of live, in-flight entertainment to the skies.

Passengers on select Little Red flights destined for Edinburgh or Manchester will be entertained by stand-up comics and musical acts at 30,000 feet (9.1km). Little Red is the carrier’s recently launched domestic airline in Britain.

The in-flight entertainment was launched to coincide with the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which is currently being held in the Scottish capital.

The month-long event is the largest arts festival in the world and includes performers in comedy, theatre, dance, music and plastic arts.

Acts will be announced through Virgin Atlantic’s Facebook and Twitter channels.

Using flash mobs and live entertainment to break up the monotony of plane rides has become increasingly common among airlines looking to endear themselves to their customers. In 2011, for instance, on a flight between San Francisco and Honolulu, Hawaiian Airlines brought hula dancers onboard, while Virgin America turned its aisles into a runway with a fashion show in collaboration with Banana Republic last year.

This past June, during a three-hour delay on the tarmac on a flight from Beijing to Macau, musicians from the Philadelphia Orchestra broke out their instruments and provided some grounded entertainment to the delight of bored and frustrated passengers.

And last year, dancers on Kanye West’s Australia Tour 2012 broke into dance to his song Runaway, to the bewilderment and amusement of passengers in-flight. – AFP Relaxnews
