A family affair
An enjoyable, light comedy that’s not for the faint of heart.
We’re The Millers revolves around the life of drug dealer david Clark (Jason Sudeikis), who gets robbed of his supply as well as of all his money when he tries to help a young teenager.
Broke, and heavily in debt with his boss Brad Gurdlinger (Ed Helms), Clark has to go to Mexico and transport a “smidge and a half” of marijuana back into the United States. In order to go in and out undetected, he hires down-on-her-luck stripper Rose O’Reilly (Jennifer Aniston), home alone teen Kenny Rosmore (Will Poulter), and runaway teen Casey Mathis (Emma Roberts) to pose as his fake family. together, they travel in a shiny RV to pick up the pot (which turns out to be several tons) and cross the border into the US.
A fast and easy plan, but one that quickly goes downhill when they are faced with one challenge after another.
We’re The Millers is a hilariously entertaining movie with a great cast. Aniston once again sheds her good-girl image (remember her turn as the crazy, obsessed boss of Charlie day in Horrible Bosses?) as Rose, who unashamedly uses her skills to get the group out of trouble, while Sudeikis’ Clark is perfect as both the stressed out dealer-turned-smuggler and pretend husband-and-father.
With We’re The Millers, Sudeikis proves that he has the ability to carry a big budget movie. the chemistry between Aniston and Sudeikis is sizzling, and the barbs they trade are quick, witty and sharp.
Roberts also does a good job of portraying surly Casey while Helms is perfect as Clark’s annoying liar of a boss, Brad.
However, the real show stealer here is Poulter, who portrays bumbling, honest Kenny, with surprising depth and wonderful comedic timing, commanding each scene he is in. there are a couple of scenes in the movie that will have you simultaneously cringing and laughing. You will never look at spiders or the movie Black Hawk Down the same way again.
Offerman and Hahn also deliver sound performances as affable, over-friendly fellow RV family members that the Millers spend the night with, and whose daughter (Molly C. Quinn) immediately catches Kenny’s heart.
directed by Rawson Marshall thurber and with a screenplay written by Bob Fisher and Steve Faber (who also wrote Wedding Crashers), as well as Sean Anders and John Morris ( Hot Tub Time Machine), the movie keeps a fast pace with no unnecessary twists in the plot.
What might put potential audience off about the movie is the somewhat predictable ending. You can see what’s going to happen at the end even from the very beginning. However, that shouldn’t deter you from watching the movie, as the journey the Millers take, and the Millers themselves, make it worth it.
All in all, the movie is enjoyable to watch and is a fun two-hour break from your daily chores. Make sure to stay on until the credits roll, because there are some really entertaining outtakes which are as funny as the movie, and also show how much fun the cast and crew had while filming the movie.
