A stellar reputation
aS one of the top medical schools in Malaysia, Melaka-Manipal Medical College (Manipal University) (MMMC) is highly regarded in the country as a provider of high-quality medical professionals to the Malaysian health system.
In fact, MMMC’s reputation has spread far and wide with many of its alumni spread across the globe, including the United States, Canada, Britain, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore.
MMMC’s reputation stems from its drive towards excellence in the services it provides to students, and its enviable record of awards and accolades are a showcase for its accomplishments.
MMMC offers two undergraduate programmes and a pre-university course.
The MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery), its flagship programme, has been around since 1997, at a time when the number of private medical schools could be counted with the fingers of one hand.
True to its mission and vision, the drive for quality education has never slackened as it continually looks at ways of improving its delivery system. It has been branded a Superbrand in Medical Education in 2011 by the Institute of Superbrands, South-East Asia.
The number of doctors who have graduated from MMMC today stands at 2,511.
Hot on the heels of the MBBS is the highly popular Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS). Enrolment is all filled up a year ahead of its intakes, with queries numbering about three times the number of seats available.
The BDS remains a popular choice owing to the top ranking of Manipal College of Dental Surgery (MCODS, Manipal) in India.
MMMC’s Foundation in Science (FiS) is a “purpose-built” pre-university programme.
This is due to the novel idea of including the basics of some medicine and dentistry subjects in the Foundation with the aim of providing a prelude to and facilitating transition to the first year of medical studies.
The Foundation is also becoming very popular, and students who enrol in this course are guaranteed a place in the MBBS and BDS, as long they fulfil the minimum entry requirements into the degrees of their choice. Conducted in its campus in Malacca, students often remark on the conducive learning environment of MMMC.
The FiS is a challenging 12-month programme. What is heartening is that students fresh from the regimented Malaysian school system face up to the challenge and the pass rates of the groups have not dropped below 85%.
Parents have now taken to enrolling their kids two to three months before the intake date, as MMMC has a self-imposed limit of 100 for each of its three annual intakes.
MMMC is on the right path, guided by its motto “Inspired by Life”.
