The many duties of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar
IN addition to his duties as Head of State, the Yang di-Pertuan besar is also head of Islamic affairs in Negri Sembilan.
He is assisted by the four Undangs (Sg Ujong, Jelebu, Johol and rembau) in such matters.
His duties include the appointment of the mufti and other religious officials and the general administration of Islamic affairs through the Negri Sembilan Islamic Affairs Council.
He is also the chairman of the Dewan Keadilan dan Undang which advises him on questions relating to malay Customs.
The Yang di-Pertuan besar presides at all meetings of the Dewan, whose members also comprise the ruling Chiefs (the four Undang and Tunku besar Tampin), Tunku besar Seri menanti and Dato’ Syahbandar Sungei Ujong.
He is also a member of the Conference of rulers which, among others, elect the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Timbalan Yang diPertuan Agong.
The conference also appoints members of the Special Court, granting pardons, reprieves and respites, or remitting, suspending or commuting sentences.
Tuanku muhriz was the youngest ever attendee of the Conference of rulers, when he represented the state as regent in 1965 when Tuanku munawir was abroad for medical treatment. He attended again in 1966 when his father was unwell.
As Yang Di-Pertuan besar, Tuanku muhriz was appointed Colonel-in-Chief of the royal Signals regiment as well as the royal electrical and mechanical engineers Corps with effect from Dec 30, 2008.
He is also the Chancellor of Universiti Kebangsaan malaysia.
