First-ever green varsity campus

-

HERIOT-WATT University (HWU) has chosen Malaysia to establish its stateof-the-art, purpose-built green campus in Putrajaya. It is dubbed as the “World’s First Intelligent Garden City”.

Heriot-Watt University Malaysia’s (HWUM) campus has a student capacity of 4,000 and will be the first to open in the city.

It is also the first-ever green university campus built in the country.

HWUM opened its doors to students early last year with the introduction of a global MBA programme from Edinburgh Business School, followed by a range of industry-relevant postgraduate programmes.

The university rewards all undergraduate students an inaugural scholarship of RM3,000 with basic entry requirements met for the September 2014 intake.

High achiever scholarships for undergraduate studies are awarded up to 30% off the first-year tuition fees.

Scholarship and non-scholarship holders who maintain 70% average in their undergraduate studies will be awarded a 35% Academic Excellence scholarship the following year.

The bachelor’s degree programmes offered at HWUM include Business, Finance, Mechanical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Construction Project Management and Quantity Surveying.

The programmes are closely linked to the actual respective industries to ensure they provide career-applicable skill sets and that they help mould future industry leaders.

This is why it is globally known that HWU graduates have a higher employability rate upon graduation, with 94% of graduates securing full-time employment or furthering their studies within six months.

HWUM facilitates a strong demand for professionals in the construction sector with the Construction Project Management and Quantity Surverying programmes.

These programmes are focused on delivering high-quality graduates who are prepared for careers in the public and private sectors – in client, consultancy and contracting organisations.

With the continuous increase in petroleum product consumption, the global energy industry needs more petroleum engineers to improve oil and gas extraction, oversee drilling, and provide technical analyses and solutions.

The bachelor’s degree in Petroleum Engineering at HWUM is designed to produce graduates capable of satisfying this growing industry in a wide range of subjects such as reservoir analysis and simulation studies and drilling production patterns.

It will also include the design and implementation of oil field production, which will prepare the graduates to undertake technical and managerial careers across the sector.

Through problem solving-based projects and assignments, students will cultivate the ability to apply skills to real-world engineering problems and deepen their understanding of petroleum engineering principles.

HWUM also offers a bachelor’s degree in Mechnical Engineering for those interested in a more versatile career.

Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest and oldest engineering disciplines that can be applied to various jobs involving any product or machinery that moves and is motorised.

It prepares graduates to be engineers in various industries such as energy, aerospace, transportation, chemical, manufacturing and even entertainment.

Many of the subjects in the programme contextualise mechanical engineering science principles with mini-projects and teamwork to produce solutions to engineering problems.

Core courses such as design and manufacture as well as business awareness, safety and sustainability are particularly aimed at bringing knowledge from all engineering science disciplines into a project.

Postgraduate degrees currently offered at the university include business, built environment and engineering.

The university awards all high-achieving graduates with a bachelor’s honours degree with second upper-class and above the chance to apply for up to 20% off total tuition fees, subject to an interview and panel assessment.

Further scholarships for foundation to postgraduate studies are also available from the university’s corporate and industry partners such as YTL Corporation Bhd, Great Eastern Life Malaysia, MNRB Holdings Bhd and Loh & Loh Corporation Bhd.

Prospective students are invited to visit the university during the Foundation & Undergraduate Information Day on March 29 and 30.

Make a reservation at www. seats are limited to 100 only.
