Just one step to a fabulous job

rEALISING that academic qualification is not the only answer for today’s demanding industry, Taylor’s University School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts (TCHT) has partnered up with renowned international names in the hospitality industry to focus on developing and nurturing its students to have what it takes to join the industry, and even to secure job offers before they graduate.

The Student Employment Programme (STEP) was established back in 2010 with the aim of enhancing the opportunities available to students in meeting the highest standards set by leading hotel chains.

STEP is a unique programme that allows selected degree students at TCHT an opportunity to join world’s leading hotel chains even before they graduate.

Since 2010, Taylor’s has partnered with Shangri-La Hotel and Resorts Malaysia, Hilton Worldwide, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group and Starwood Group for STEP.

After rigorous interviews by both TCHT and the hotels’ representatives, the students will attend specially designed classes, workshops and seminars designed by the companies and take part in internship with their respective hotel.

As their development will be closely monitored over the two years of their studies, they will be able to secure a job offer if they perform well before their graduation.

Bill Xuan Ho, one of the students hand- picked for STEP, chose Taylor’s University to do his degree thanks to the reputation TCHT has garnered and due to the fact that its programmes are internationally recognised.

“I signed up to participate in the STEP programme after attending the introductory seminar. Being part of the programme has been extremely beneficial for me as it has provided me with the tools to achieve my goal of being a successful hotelier,” said the Beijing native.

The 25 year-old young man is now employed as the Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur sales manager for China Market, merely two years after his graduation.

TCHT dean Neethiahnanthan Ari Ragavan commented that the programmes show the school’s commitment towards bringing the best of both worlds to its students.

“As educators, we constantly ask ourselves how we can provide the best for our students, and ensure that they have the edge over other graduates in the industry.

“How can we equip them to stand out from the rest? How can we give our graduates a head-start in their careers and provide them with the opportunity to work with the best?

“For the selected students of the programmes, they will not only gain the best in hospitality, tourism and culinary arts education from us, but will also be trained by some of the well-recognised names in the industry. Therefore, this continuous effort also resonates closely with the university’s new mission, to be the Top Employers’ Top Choice University,” he said.

Established in 1986, TCHT is the first Malaysian private institution dedicated to hospitality management. Today, TCHT is the only private institution of higher learning in Malaysia that offers a full range of hospitality and tourism courses as well as a host of continuing professional education courses.
