Learning to serve you well
HOSPITALITY professionals should be updated on the latest international trends in this sector,” says HTMi, the School of International Hotel and Tourism Management Switzerland marketing director Rohit Bhatia.
“Globalisation has had a lot of impact on hospitality. For one, it has exposed managers to different cultures. Secondly, with increased business and leisure travel, this sector is able to contribute in terms of increasing foreign exchange reserves.”
Some emerging trends in the hospitality sector are witnessed in the domain of integration, globalisation and management. Vertical integration began in this sector a few years ago.
Talking about the emerging trends in management, Bhatia says, “The complex forces of capacity control, safety and security, capital movement and technology issues will require a future management cadre that is able to adapt to rapid changes across all the traditional functions of management.
“The growing complexity of the customer/ employee interaction will shape human resource needs in the future. The customer, armed with more information will expect frontline and other hospitality staff to be at least as knowledgeable about the firm’s offerings as themselves.”
Graduates from hospitality management programmes enjoy a wide variety of career options.
“Lucrative and interesting openings abound,” says Bhatia. “The requisite personality traits are creativity coupled with a flair for strategic thinking, a pleasant and patient disposition, organisational skills, resourcefulness, confidence and dynamism.”
Those who have pursued a formal culinary education, meanwhile, have more specific career options.
