tHE Malaysian Institute of Art’s (MIA) Ladies Chorus clinched the Best Folklore Award at the 3rd Baguio International Music Festival.
They mesmerised the international audience with their splendid vocal rendition of Malaysian folk songs and dances during the festival, which was held in the Philippines last December.
This win adds to the many major awards which the Ladies Chorus has won, including a Gold Medal in “A Voyage of Song” International Choir Competition 2009 held in Penang and the Female Chamber World Championship at the 6th World Choir Games in Shaoxing, China, in 2010.
The Ladies Chorus also won the Female Chamber category at the 2nd International Choir Competition in Hue, Vietnam, in 2012.
Ladies Chorus member Teh Tian Yoon shared that the trip to the Philippines was an enriching experience.
To her, the journey was not to compete and envy the glory of other nations but to exchange culture and bring musical talents together.
The MIA Ladies Chorus was formed in 2004 under the auspices of the Music Department.
Apart from participating in local and international competitions, it had also performed as invited guests at the International Kodaly Symposium in Brisbane, Australia, in July 2011 and the Sound Thinking Summer Music Programme in Brisbane in January this year.
In its efforts to contribute to MIA’s corporate social responsibility initiatives, the Ladies Chorus had performed for the Haiti Concert Aid Fund and the Typhoon Haiyan Aid Fund, just to name a few.
Funds had also been raised for the Malaysian Association for the Blind and the Soroptimist International Club of Bangsar for disadvantaged children and single women.
MIA was founded in 1967 as a nonprofit institution and has produced thousands of professional artists, designers and musicians for the creative industry.
The institute offers a range of diploma courses in the field of art, design and music, such as Illustration, Interior Design, Graphic Design, Textile and Fashion Design, Industrial Design, Fine Art and Music with comprehensive and well-designed course contents.
All the courses are accredited by Malaysia Qualifications Agency (MQA).
MIA has established links with prestigious universities and colleges in Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan and China.
Through these links, MIA graduates can complete their degree programmes overseas and save time and cost at the same time.
With the MQA accreditation, MIA graduates may also further their studies in local universities.
MIA is now open for the new intake. In conjunction with it, the institute is holding an Open Day on March 29 and 30, from 9.30am to 4pm.
Talks and counselling will be held by the Art, Design and Music departments.
An exhibition will also be held at MIA’s art gallery, featuring the creative works of young talents to inspire prospective students.
For the convenience of parents and students, MIA will extend its weekend counselling hours from April 5 till May 3 from 9.30am to 4pm.
