Stepping stone to Melbourne varsity

-

FOR more than 20 years, Trinity College Foundation Studies (TCFS) has been an important pathway for international students seeking entry to the University of Melbourne. It is an outstanding programme.

“Working closely with Trinity’s firstrate teaching staff, the University of Melbourne oversees the curriculum and, on average, offers places at the university to more than 80% of TCFS graduates,” says University of Melbourne vice-chancellor Prof Glyn Davis.

TCFS academic staff are enthusiastic and dedicated. They relate well with international students and are confident users of the latest technology.

Each year, a number of them continue their professional development through research and publication in their areas of specialisation.

TCFS staff achievements in recent years include:

> Drama teacher Dr Rosemary Blight who graduated with a second PhD from the University of Melbourne in March last year. She has undertaken research in using drama as a teaching methodology for communication skills, confidence building and cultural orientation, specifically with regard to students from non-English-speaking backgrounds studying in Australia at the tertiary level.

> Lecturer in Literature and Education Technology manager Dr Jennifer Mitchell attended the International Conference on eLearning at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in June 2012 and presented a paper at the Higher Education Research & the Student Learning Experience in Business Conference in December in the same year.

> Lecturer in Environment and Development Dr Cathy Symington presented a workshop at the Australian Council for Educational Leaders annual conference in Canberra in October last year. She was also invited to become a member of the Advisory Board of the international, nongovernmental environmental organisation Weforest.

Under the guidance and support of TCFS academic staff, TCFS graduates are consistently among the top performing students at the University of Melbourne. This has been confirmed by research conducted by the university over a number of years.

“Students undertaking the Trinity Foundation Studies programme – with its high academic standards, extensive student support services, and focus on teaching critical and creative thinking – are certainly well prepared for success at university,” says Prof Davis.
