Flexible education system

-

The life of a teenager at the brink of stepping into university can be quite scary. Apart from the challenges of facing an entirely new environment in the university campus, they have a daunting task of weighing many options in course choices and deciding what their future would be.

The journey a student takes throughout the school years is most crucial.

The importance of a holistic and flexible education system that exposes them to varied options and experiences in their younger years is undeniable.

The Australian International School Malaysia (AISM)’s 13-year school curriculum exemplifies such a system.

AISM, a member of Taylor’s education Group, is the only international school in Malaysia offering an Australian curriculum, delivered by Australian teachers for children age three (Preparation) to 18 (Year 12).

The school offers an internationally recognised qualification leading to the higher School Certificate (hSC), which provides seamless transition into education pathways in Australia and all over the world.

This is the seventh year AISM has been awarded three full scholarships to Malaysian students to pursue the higher School Certificate matriculation programme at the school.

The scholarship covers the cost of application fee, admissions fee, tuition fees and technology fees for Years 11 and 12, and may be extended (depending on the student programme) to Taylor’s University upon completion of the higher School Certificate.

It is awarded to deserving students who would not have the opportunity to attend and benefit from a school such as the AISM and is based on the strength of the student’s academic performance, background in school activities, including leadership, sport, arts and school community involvement.

One of the scholarship recipients this year, Seo Yiie Lyn, is a high achiever who intends to study Biology after completing the higher School Certificate.

“The Australian curriculum encourages students to develop a number of skills, including oral, presentation, comprehensive reporting and writing skills across a range of subjects which are very valuable in life,” she says.

“AISM has such an extensive Co-curricular Programme and studying here has given me the opportunity to think out of the box rather than just learn from textbooks,” she adds.

Another scholarship recipient, Choo Khai Kern, has had diverse learning opportunities; from being in a Malaysian Chinese school, military boarding school and now at AISM.

“Being at AISM has broadened my cultural understanding and helped me prepare for university,” says Choo.

Maverlyn Tan Yie Ning representing Malacca in netball competitions was taken in by the setup of the classrooms which encourages collaboration among students and teachers.

“Learning is fun and enjoyable,” she says and has wasted no time in pursuing her passion in basketball at AISM.

every year, the scholarship programme has produced high achievers who have taken on productive places in the global community.

Some have gone on to win scholarships from top universities in the world. Others have been assured their dream job even before graduating from varsity.

“AISM is indeed the pathway to international excellence. Our students have successfully entered institutions in all over the world after completion of the higher School Certificate,” says David Kilpatrick, the school principal.

With increasing demand, the school has reached its full capacity and is now expanding to provide capacity for 1,000 students with the opening of a new Junior School complex.
