IF you live in a low light apartment, love a bit of green around you, check out these two hardy plants.

the Panda Plant

Also nicknamed Horsehead Philodendron or the Fiddle Leaf Philodendron ( Philodendron bipennifolium), this plant has lovely large green leaves.

In young plants, these leaves are whole but older plants will have attractive split leaves.

The Panda Plant comes from tropical jungles in South America. It lives on the jungle floor and climbs up tree trunks. In optimum conditions, they can grow up to 20 feet tall and take up six feet of space all round.

This plant likes filtered light (to mimic conditions back home in the Amazon) but if it has too little light, its leaves remain very small.

If they begin to look yellowish, move them to more light. Water these every few days, allowing the soil to dry.

Guiana Chestnut

Also nicknamed saba nut and money plant ( Pachira aquatica), this plant has a thin trunk topped by a spray of light green leaves.

This plant flowers and also produces nuts – said to be edible, like chestnuts.

The Guiana Chestnut comes from tropical swamps in Central and South America.

It loves moisture, which means you can water it every day. Just make sure that the plant doesn’t stand in water – keep it properly drained.

This plant likes filtered light but like the Panda Plant, move it into more light if the leaves begin to look yellowish. In optimum conditions, these plants typically grow up to six feet tall in homes but can be two to three times as large if put outside.
