Alpina’s watches put to the test
FROM the very beginning – as far back as 1883, Alpina has been associated with horological innovation. Despite adhering to a tradition of fine Swiss watchmaking, the brand also strives to improve.
Whether through new ways of creating an excellent working environment, or with the introduction of the latest quality control criteria before any other brand, Alpina as a watch manufacturer stands out.
It is interesting to note that Alpina was first formed to optimise the manufacturing process of movements and timepieces.
This, however, led it to begin developing and producing its own in-house calibres and chronometers.
Today, the ideals upon which Alpina was founded on are still alive in its Geneva manufacturer. The brand is well recognised for its range of sports watches, of which has kept to the most exacting horological standards.
This year’s highlight happens to be the Alpiner 4 GMT. It is part of the Alpina “4” line of watches, bringing together four themes: anti-magnetism, anti-shock, water resistance and stainless steel construction.
The Alpiner 4 GMT is a fully automatic watch, featuring a new and easy-to-use GMT functionality. It allows users to set the local time by independently moving the hand from hour to hour.
Also incorporated is a bezel insert marked to 360°. This aids in using the watch as a makeshift compass, whereby turning it (together with the 24H scale coupling) offers a convenient way of telling the direction.
The sunray dial of the watch has large applied luminous indexes for perfect readability in all weathers and conditions. The “4” logo acts as a constant reminder that the model possesses all the four key qualities of a robust sports watch too.
To really put the Alpiner 4 GMT to a test, Alpina is sending it on an expedition to some of Earth’s most extreme locations.
The brand is supporting polar explorers Borge Ousland and Vincent Colliard in their IceLegacy mission.
The duo – together with Alpina’s watches – will be crossing 20 of the largest glaciers in the world on skis. Their epic journey (which kicked off in June) is said to be leading them from Russia to Alaska, as well as Patagonia and Pakistan.
The goal is to help raise public awareness, garner the attention of governments and give a louder voice to scientists, in the hope of increasing efforts to fight the disappearance of already dwindling glaciers.
No doubt, under these extreme exploration conditions, Alpina’s innovation with regards to the Alpiner 4 GMT performance will be an indispensable ally to the IceLegacy adventure and aims.
