Going places with the CIMP
THE Canadian International Matriculation Programme (CIMP) is one of five preuniversity programmes provided by Sunway College, offering curriculum approved by the Ontario (Canada) Ministry of Education, which is taught by some of the best teachers in the world, comprising 80% Ontario certified teachers.
Upon graduating from the CIMP, students are awarded with an internationally recognised Ontario Secondary School Diploma, which serves as a seal of approval of graduates with competencies and skills ready for top universities and future employment.
This programme is a credible assurance of quality learning as students are involved in every learning aspect of an engaging and effective education, ranging from practical lab experiments to blog creation.
A vast misconception of the CIMP as a transition for only Canadian universities has been proven incorrect by Sunway College.
In fact, Sunway College has a consistent and successful record of placing its CIMP students in top universities in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States, India, Singapore and Malaysia, besides Canada.
In addition, some CIMP graduates received scholarships from well-known universities such as Monash University Malaysia, National University of Singapore, Carleton University and Trent University in Canada, University of Wales in the UK and University of Melbourne in Australia.
Cherlyn Tong Ka Lyn is one of many successful CIMP graduates from Sunway College who has continued on to a non-Canadian university.
Cherlyn, who graduated in 2012, is currently pursuing Biotechnology at Imperial College, London, UK.
She reminisced about her time in the CIMP: “Regardless of the diversity in interests, personalities, priorities and culture, everyone fits in. It is the epitome of unity in diversity where the programme respects and embraces individuality, and gave me plenty of leeway to be myself and enabled me to grow.
“I believe it also gave me a different edge over others, in that I am more accustomed to the university lifestyle and workload.
“It is not all academics in the CIMP; I have picked up invaluable life lessons from the lecturers and staff. The people I have met continue to make a positive impact on my life. Being a part of the CIMP family was truly a different experience altogether.”
Her testimony forms a small part of the Sunway College CIMP alumni success stories in various fields such as medicine, science, engineering, accounting, business and arts.
They are results of the high degree of attention and care offered in the CIMP for its students’ development in both academia and beyond the curriculum.
Learning off site or outside the classroom, such as participation in extracurricular activi- ties, is equally prioritised in the CIMP.
Projects within a wider community allows CIMP students the opportunity to be independent and responsible citizens, develop cross-cultural understanding, and hone their problem-solving, communication and leadership skills.
