Protecting kids with probiotics
PROBIOTICS are defined as live microbes that when administered in adequate amounts, have massive health benefits on the host, including strengthening immune defences against harmful pathogens.
However, not all probiotics are the same. According to the Expert Consultation Guidelines provided by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO), the first thing to look for when choosing a probiotic is its full name, which includes the genus, species and strain.
Secondly, check out the website of the company that provides or sells the product. It may tell you more about:
– The strain used since the beneficial properties of probiotics are strain-related.
– How much probiotic each serving contains. The dosage and duration of use must be specified by the manufacturer of each strain based on scientific evidence, and as approved in the country of sale.
– The research and amount of said probiotic used in the study.
Thirdly, a good probiotic should be stable and have the ability to survive in the stomach.
This is important to ensure its ability to confer any health benefits to the host. For instance, both Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM and Bifidobacterium lactis Bi-07 have been shown to survive the harsh conditions of the stomach.
Other than that, the probiotic strains should meet the key requirements with a demonstration of:
– A high tolerance towards the low pH of been scientifically proven to help keep children healthy during the cold and flu season.
A double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study, “Probiotic Effects on Cold and Influenza-Like Symptom Incidence and Duration in Children”, as published in Pediatrics 2009, monitored the impact of Howaru premium probiotics vs a placebo. Results showed a significant reduction in fever, cough and runny nose.
The number of sick days taken was reduced by nearly half and the number of antibiotic prescriptions was reduced by 80% among children taking Howaru premium probiotics.
Howaru premium probiotics are scientifically proven to have protective effects against infections.
They compete for nutrient and adhesion sites with bad bacteria as well as stimulate the immune system to increase phagocytosis and produce lactic acid to kill pathogens.
If you are always on the move, consider taking a powder-based probiotic that have been dried and stabilised properly. Although dormant, they remain alive and will be activated upon reaching the moist environment in the body.
