Get little ones to read

- By EllEn WhytE

WhEn books mean studying, it’s not easy to get kids to explore the pleasure of reading. however, studies show that reading from an early age boosts development from picking up a better vocabulary to exercising imagination. So, how can you get kids to pick up a book? Start young There are block books with chewable soft covers for kids aged two. Invest in these and “read” them together. Kids tend to like the same stories over and over again, so when you’re making the choices, pick something you like. Do the noises Reading is all about visualising what’s going on so help your tots “see” the story by doing the sounds. Yes, this is where you can let your inner drama queen or king take over. Have fun Some educational books are fun; many are not. If it’s not fun, your child won’t want to read so pick something fun instead of something that teaches a skill. Books about gross bodily functions are always popular. Read together If you don’t read, your child may think that reading is just another chore, like going to school. So read books together when they’re little, and have a family book hour at least twice a week. Bedtime stories are always a great idea. Let your kids choose If you’re lucky enough to have a library near you, get the kids a subscription and make regular visits.

If not, make trips to the bookshop a family occasion and set aside a portion of pocket money so that kids can choose and buy their own books. Read along books Books that come with a CD where famous actors read the story and tell the child when to turn the page, are a terrific way to ease children into reading. Classics like Peter and the Wolf are always excellent.
