Never-ending story

The life of a successful fashion designer is a hectic one.

and sometimes doing both at the same time! But I guess for fashion junkies like me, it’s precisely this fast pace that keeps me going.

As I mentioned earlier, it’s important to keep up with changing trends – not just in fashion, but also in lifestyles, architecture and work styles – as all of this influence fashion, which is influenced by it. What’s more, trend-spotting is serious business, and not something I can manage on my own.

I have been working with a trend focus company for a few seasons now, which is quite a departure from the past. Previously, I was dismissive of trends and designed according to my heart’s desire. It was quite an exciting journey, but it also contributed to stress – as there was always the fear that stockists may not like what I had to offer. And without an impressive list of stockists, some of the better trade shows may refuse designer participation.

As I’m always on the look-out for better trade shows around the world to promote Malaysian fashion, I have to ensure there’s a healthy line up of stockists. There simply are no short cuts in this line.

After Dubai, I will be flying off again on a sourcing trip for Fall/Winter 2015 materials. Meanwhile, I am also preparing a Sakura Collection for a show in Osaka end of next month. I will also be taking a few days off after Osaka to visit Tokyo. I used to go to there every year before I started my own business. I love Japan, especially the street fashion and the natural beauty of the country. Every time I’m there, I feel so inspired.

It can be tiring, but I really enjoy my work. I guess that’s what people mean when they say you need to have passion to be in fashion. Because of my passion, I’m always driven to do better.

In between the sourcing, marketing and designing, I also make a point to meet with clients to understand them better and design clothes that reflect this. I have been very fortunate to have had some really friendly clients, who are always full of laughter and good cheer. Needless to say, such clients add to the joy of designing.

Wish me luck in promoting Malaysian fashion to the world. Meanwhile, do go to my website to check out my SS15 ready-towear collection.
